Top 10 Movie Wingmen

(First Active Media) Win Win is released in cinemas 20th May, an offbeat comedy where a disheartened attorney - Mike (Paul Giamatti) is struggling for money.
He also coaches a wrestling team in his spare time, who haven’t known what it’s like to win a match. Through questionable circumstances Mike stumbles upon a star wrestler, much to his best friend Terry’s (Bobby Cannavale) delight.

Mike couldn’t ask for a better wingman, he’s trustworthy, encouraging, funny and positive (the majority of the time!). All the qualities you need from a top wingman. To celebrate the release of Win Win, we’ve compiled a knockout list of the Top 10 Wingmen in movies!
- Goose in Top Gun (1986)
The 80’s classic  Top Gun, where we have Lt Nick Bradshaw, who we’ll remember more recognisably as ‘Goose’.
He played alongside Maverick (Tom Cruise) and was always showing his loyalty to the man, whether it was helping him pick up ladies at the bar or filling Maverick with confidence whilst flying he was always there for him. The tragic departure of his character in the film was a sad loss.

- Randall ‘Pink’ Floyd in Dazed and Confused (1993)
Randall ‘Pink’ Floyd takes Mitch Kramer under his wing in this 70’s inspired movie.
He’s possibly just as much a mentor as a wingman, so whilst Pink introduces Mitch to drink alcohol and smoke weed, he doesn’t forget his wingman duty of helping him conquer his desire for a certain lady.

 - Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story (1995-2010)
‘To infinity and beyond’ is Buzz’s tagline, not a bad statement to be guided by. And with Buzz being the new edition to the family of toys, he doesn’t hit it off too well with Woody to begin with.
But through his charm, wit and realisation that he is a toy and not about to conquer the universe he soon becomes Woody’s wingman (quite literally, get it!) and looks out for him and helps him like no other toy could.

- Trent in Swingers (1996)
A classic wingman scenario set in the swing revival where Trent’s buddy Mike has recently broken up with his girlfriend, and does all he can to get Mike out of this depression spot. An overnight trip to Vegas is just the starting point for Trent’s mission to get his friend back into the swing of things.

- Will Hunting in Good Will Hunting (1997)
It’s not always about just getting the lady, sometimes there’s an act of honour that goes with the title of a wingman.
As Will Hunting demonstrates through his act of defending his best friend Chuck, when he gets into a fight and assaults a police officer, leaving himself faced with incarceration.

- Samwise Gamgee in Lord of the Rings (2001-2002)
Samwise ‘Sam’ Gamgee is Frodo Baggins gardener and very loyal wingman as he goes with him on the journey to Mount Doom.
Sam saves Frodo’s life from Shelob and as the ring makes Frodo weaker, it’s Sam’s job to make sure he helps Frodo complete the journey. Without doubt, definitely worthy to be in this list!

- Ron Weasley in Harry Potter (2001-2011)
Wherever there’s Harry, 9 times out of 10 Ron will be there too. Through every quest that Harry embarks upon he can always rely on the trusted Ron to be with him up to a certain point.
Ron’s character injects confidence, laughter and loyalty into his best friend Harry.

- Alex ‘Hitch’ Hitchens in Hitch (2005)
What better wingman to have than an actual professional ‘date doctor’, that’s Hitch for you! As Hitch helps his soon to be buddy Albert find the lady of his dreams, it seems that Hitch’s techniques don’t seem to be working too well in his own love life.
A friendship is built between Albert and Hitch over time and Hitch has all Albert’s best interests at heart.

- Alan Garner in the Hangover (2009)
With the soon to be married Doug out on his stag do in Las Vegas, his three friends come along including his soon to be brother in law Alan.
As the night takes a turn for the worse and they lose the groom, it’s time for the very hungover Alan and co to start retracing their steps to find out exactly what happened the night before and to make sure they find the groom and bring him back for the wedding. True wingman qualities!

- Terry in Win Win (2011)
Without further a do and bringing us right up to date we now present the final movie wingman in our list - Terry from Win Win.
Terry proves that even though he’s going through a tough time for himself, he’s still there for his friend from schooldays no matter what. He definitely portrays all the true wingman qualities and can’t be faulted for his loyalty to Mike.
